This is a new topic for the IEEE. There are a variety of books and tools available to help designers consider the larger system and the total life cycle that our products inhabit. Benyus has written an intriguing book where the author explains that living systems are a fertile source for new product and process ideas. The group may start by reviewing her book, then proceed to study biological systems to expand our thinking space for design alternatives. Another approach may be to examine the efficiency of products and their design. Biomimicry by Benyus (http://www.bestwebbuys.com/books/compare/isbn/0060533226/isrc/b-compare-srchbox) In this book the author lays out all sorts of possible approaches to enhancing product design through the study of biology. Life Itself by Rensberger (http://www.oup-usa.org/isbn/0195108744.html) (http://www.bestwebbuys.com/books/search?isrc=b-compare-srchbox&t=ISBN&q=0195108744) A readable introduction to the structure and process of the cell, the basic building block of life.
