Most digital engineers are familiar with the basic design and synthesis of ssequential circuits.

The purpose of this group is to expand our knowledge to more advanced topics, and here are two approaches :

Digital Systems Engineering by Dally and Poulton (http://www.bestwebbuys.com/books/compare/isbn/0521592925/isrc/b-home-search) In this book the authors go all the way from the basics up to synchronous design (touching on phase locked loops and a few other advanced topics). Used for their course at Stanford: http://cva.stanford.edu/dig_sys_engr/

Asynchronous Circuit Design by Myers (http://www.bestwebbuys.com/books/compare/isbn/047141543X/isrc/b-compare-srchbox) As the title says, design without synchronization. Clear explanations and exercises.
